So as you know, I don’t eat dairy. I can guess what you’re thinking. What about whey protein shakes?! A gym rat that doesn’t drink shakes?! What is this?!
Don’t despair. I still have protein shakes.
It was a bumpy road, but I think I’ve finally found a non-dairy protein powder that I can actually enjoy.
I started by trying pea protein. Good protein content, dairy free, cheaper than whey. But eww.
It tastes like pea… It REALLY tastes like pea.
My usual pre workout shake had become a revolting mish mash of peas, fruit, and peanut butter. I tried to like it. I really did. But there was just no chance. I held my nose, downed four or five shakes, and then threw the rest in the bin.
I then started looking into rice and hemp protein. Nothing alarming about the taste in the reviews. Might be worth a shot. But the protein content just wasn’t up to snuff. I was pretty deep into a diet at the time. I really didn’t want to be drinking extra calories from fat or carbohydrates at this point. Another powder crossed off the list.
So I gave up. I went back to whey. It wasn’t worth the hassle.
My body disagreed. What was once an easily digestible protein drink, now started to give me severe cramping in my stomach. I’m sure you’ve heard about protein farts. Well this was on another level (apologies to my friends and co-workers). I turned to Google to find out what was going on. Turns out that cutting dairy from your diet can actually bring about a kind of dairy intolerance. I guess your body forgets how to digest it correctly.
Either way, this couldn’t go on.
Back to the internet, and my online supplement shop and I found it. Finally, the holy grail of non-dairy protein. This was palatable, excellent protein content, and cheaper than whey. It changed my life forever.
Allow me to introduce you to beef protein.
Ok, it does sound weird. Drinking a beefy protein shake (Rocky eat your heart out). It only came in three flavours, so picking one wasn’t difficult (Chocolate Peanut all the way!) Upon opening the bag, the first thing you notice is the smell. It was a sort of salty, chocolately, peanuty odour.
Bad start, but I soldiered on. Added it into a mixer cup, gave it a good old shake, and poured it into a glass.
The end result was a glass of brown water with a load of clumps at the top.
I was almost ready to give up on beef, another failed attempt at trying to rid myself of stomach turning whey.
But then I blended it. Turns out it just required a little more brute force to rid the shake of its lumpy bits. The final product was a nice, thick, chocolatey shake . No nasty clumps, no beefy taste.
I lapped it up with joy. I could now easily get my daily protein injection without dairy shakes.
So if you’re looking for an alternative to whey, and own a blender, then I highly recommend you try beef protein.
Obviously, if you’re a vegetarian or vegan you are going to have to keep looking.
If you’ve found a non-dairy shake that you enjoy, let me know in the comments! I’ll definitely give it a try!
